Dear Holy Cross Community,
Traditionally Lent is a time of preparation, repentance, self reflection and sacrifice. It begins next Wednesday 5th March with Ash Wednesday and concludes with the celebration of the passion and resurrection of Christ at Easter. It is a time of self-audit, as to how we are living our lives as Christians. Looking at it from our students perspective it is a period of “target setting’ or more specifically resetting, for how we are living our lives in Christ. Archbishop Fisher’s letter on Lenten Penance is included in this edition of Crossroads.
If we see Lent as a chore, a period of denial or dread then we predispose ourselves to not getting the most out of this period. If we accept that this is about God’s great desire to bless us. Then, it is easier for us to place ourselves in a space to receive what God wants to give us. Either way this is a great opportunity to bring ourselves closer to God and in the process reset and refocus our lives.
Dear Parents, Carers, Students, Staff and Friends of the College,
It is hard to believe that we are already well into Week 4 of the Academic Year. The College year has started extremely well and the boys are to be congratulated on their application to their studies and for the way the vast majority of students have presented themselves each day. Last week saw two wonderful community celebrations and it was a tremendous pleasure to be able to join together as a whole College to celebrate our Opening Mass and our Swimming Carnival.
Pick up and Drop off
Thank you to those parents and carers who support the College by driving safely and adhering to the No Stopping and No Parking signs found near the College.
Before School Supervision
A reminder to students, parents and carers that before school supervision commences at 8.20am. Prior to this time there are no staff on duty. When students arrive at the College they are required to be in either the FLP or on the Visser Lawn.
Attendance and Punctuality
There is a clear and direct correlation between student attendance and academic performance. It is important that all students are in class and taking an active role in their learning if they are to fulfil their potential.
Of course there are occasions when our students are genuinely unwell and it is important that they stay at home and follow the advice of their medical practitioners. If this is not the case though, we would ask that you support the College and in doing so, support your son’s learning by insisting that he attends school everyday.
A reminder that the College day starts at 8.45am. All students are expected to be on site at this time and prepared to commence their day. If a student accumulates three lates, he will receive a Wednesday detention as a consequence. Not only are we attempting to guide our young men academically but also provide them with life long lessons that they can take with them beyond the College gates.
Supporting your son’s learning
We are often asked by parents what it is that they can do to support their son’s learning. The answer is perhaps not as complicated as many expect it to be. It is incredible how much we can support learning by simply showing an interest. It is important that our children see how much value we place on gaining a good education and that effort and commitment are rewarded as much as the final grade.
Each afternoon please take the time to talk to your son about his day and what work he has been doing. Ask to read over his Assessment tasks and homework and to listen to what he feels he is doing well and what he thinks he needs to do better.
All parents are expected to sign their son’s diary weekly but please also feel free to use the diary as a method to communicate with your son’s teacher. You can also reach out to each of your son’s teachers via email or phone at any time.
It is a well documented fact that the best results for an individual child are achieved when home and school are working together to support learning, growth and development. Please know that you have the support and a wonderful staff here at the College and that we will do all we can to assist each young man to become the very best version of themselves.
Wishing you all the very best for the weeks ahead.

Mission and Identity
The Year of Jubilee
The concept of "Jubilee" has its origins in the Book of Leviticus (chapter 25) as a special year of reconciliation, pilgrimage, and coming home. While reflecting on this, Pope Francis designated the 2025 Holy Year as a time to renew ourselves as "Pilgrims of Hope", and designated a number of Jubilee Days throughout 2025 to recognise and celebrate different groups of people and various ministries in the Church.
The Archdiocese of Sydney has consecrated a number of places that will support prayer and pilgrimage. There are 12 Jubilee Churches:
- St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney
- St Patrick’s, Church Hill
- The Shrine of St Mary of the Cross, North Sydney
- The Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Waterloo
- St Brigid’s, Coogee
- Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Randwick
- The Shrine of St Anne, Bondi
- All Saints, Liverpool
- Holy Spirit, Carnes Hill
- St Joachim’s, Lidcombe
- St Brigid’s, Marrickville
- St Cathrine Laboure, Gymea
To obtain the Jubilee plenary indulgence, either during, before or within a short time after your visit to a Pilgrim Place, you are required to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation, be refreshed by Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father with at least an Our Father and a Hail Mary.
The Pope has stated that those who:
“Pilgrimage is of course a fundamental element of every Jubilee event. Setting out on a journey is traditionally associated with our human quest for meaning in life.” - Pope Francis
Jubilee Prayer
Father in heaven,
may the faith you have given us
in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled
in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us the blessed hope
for the coming of your Kingdom.
May your grace transform us
into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos
in the sure expectation
of a new heaven and a new earth,
when, with the powers of Evil vanquished,
your glory will shine eternally.
May the grace of the Jubilee
reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
May that same grace spread
the joy and peace of our Redeemer
throughout the earth.
To you our God, eternally blessed,
be glory and praise forever.
Amen.
Lenten Companion 2025
The Parish Renewal Team from the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney has created a Lenten Companion to support the faithful of Sydney as they meditate upon the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ. While some people may use the resource within the context of a parish Lenten group, others may use it for their own individual or family prayer. Gospel Reflections have been provided by Bishop Richard Umbers, Christina Guzman, Lawrence Qummou, Helen Wagner, Dr Paul Morrissey, Sister Cecilia Joseph, OP, and Fr Julian Wellspring.
You can download the Lenten Companion 2025 here.
Brothers in Christ Student Mission and Identity Team
Fortnightly, students have the opportunity to attend a gathering where they are able to learn more about the faith with the support of Fr Steve and Br Antonio. This year we will be focusing on Bible studies, reflections on particular liturgical seasons and how students can remain faithful in the contemporary context which is hostile to tradition. Students will have the opportunity to ask deeper questions about their faith as they develop in their intellectual maturity. All students are welcome to participate in our lunchtime gatherings and we look forward to the fruits of this group.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Youth Program 2025
Holy Cross College will be offering a Sacramental Programme called the “Rite of Christian Initiation for Youths” which is inviting students who would like to understand more about the Catholic faith or would like to receive their Sacraments to do so. The course will be run through a series of classes in Term 1 and 2 following the reception of the Sacraments in Term 3. Families are also welcome to express their interest in a Sacramental Program for Adults which is called the “Rite for Christian Initiation of Adults.” Adults will complete the classes for RCIA with the Parish of St Charles Borromeo or through their local Parish. A letter was sent to parents with links to the expression of interest for students and adults. If you would like more information regarding the Sacramental Program, please feel free to contact Ms Christina Breda, Religious Education Coordinator at the College. Our student information session will be held on the Wednesday 12th of March at 5:30pm. We look forward to providing this opportunity for students, parents and staff of the College.
Youth Ministry Update

Project Compassion
On Wednesday the 5th of March the College will be officially launching the campaign for Project Compassion 2025. The Campaign will take place for the entirety of the term and focuses on the theme of “Unite against Poverty”. The College will participate in Project Compassion by raising funds through a number of fundraising initiatives with the total goal of our fundraising for 2025 being $3500. Events being held will be communicated to students and parents through the Compass Portal. Your support in this initiative is greatly appreciated.
As tradition, our first Fundraising event will be held on the 4th of March where Pancakes will be sold for Shrove Tuesday. Students will be able to purchase a pancake with various toppings for $2 and can refer to the flyer posted on compass for specific details. Please note that this is a cash only event. We look forward to seeing the support on the day and look forward to other fundraisers being held throughout the term.
Together we can make a difference.

Opening School Mass
On Wednesday, 19th February, the College celebrated the start of the school year with our Opening Mass, presided by Fr Greg and co-celebrated by Fr Steve. This year is an exciting year for our Church, as it is the Jubilee Year, celebrated every 25 years and is intended to be marked as a time to re-establish our relationship with God, to one another, and with all of creation.
We also reflect this year on how "we may always seek what is good, true and beautiful." This is the action theme for Sydney Catholic Schools and our Opening School Mass readings allowed us to reflect on how we may be "witnesses" of Christ, who bring about hope to others by being the hands and feet of Christ.
During this mass, we also commissioned our new staff for 2025 and welcome them into our Holy Cross College community.

Altar Servers
If any student is interested in training to become an Altar Server during school Masses, Fr Steve will be running training. A Google Form for expressions of interest will be sent out in the coming weeks.
Ash Wednesday
On Wednesday, 5th of March, the Lenten Season begins with Ash Wednesday. The College will be holding a whole school liturgy during Period 2. The regular 8am Mass will still be going ahead in the morning, with all parents, parishioners and staff welcome to attend.
Vinnies Ryde Service - Holidays & Week 2
Throughout the holidays and in Week 2 of Term 1, students in Year 11 and 12 were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend a Vinnies Night Patrol shift. Holy Cross is now servicing 2 shifts a month - one in the Ryde-Gladesville area, and one in the city. Thank you to those students and staff who attended over the holidays.
Students who weren't previously involved but would like to be are encouraged to see Ms Marshall.

Dear Parents and Carers,
NAPLAN 2025 parent and carer information
Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is sat by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
NAPLAN 2025 will take place from Wednesday 12 March to Monday 24 March.
NAPLAN is just one part of our school’s learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school, so the best preparation is their everyday classroom learning. Our school will also undertake activities to help students become familiar with the types of questions and tools available in the online tests.
The public demonstration site https://www.nap.edu.au/
In preparation for NAPLAN all Year 7 & 9 students participating in NAPLAN online MUST install and test the latest version of the Locked Down Browser (LDB) on their BYOD prior to undertaking the test training and actual test.
Please ensure your son has downloaded the NAPLAN Lockdown Browser for his device. Please scroll down the page to find the relevant software.
Next week we will issue the training and test session timetables.
Further information about NAPLAN is available on
If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact your child’s teacher.
Regards,
Cecilia Batista
Dear Parent, Carers, Students, Staff and Friends of the College,
Organisation is the Key
With another year beginning, our young men have an opportunity to start afresh with their schooling. The organisational skills of the students is the key to this success. As in previous years, we have provided guidance for our young men. This guidance is enhanced with the parent, student and school relationship and is in keeping with the high expectations of our students.
In Week 4 at the Parents Information evening, all parents present would have received their son’s Curriculum guide for their respective year group. This enables a direct conversation with your son on the assessments that are upcoming so they can be successful in their learning. These guides now have an electronic copy on our Assessment Task Site 2025 site. This can also be found on the favourites tab on your Compass page. The information on this site is no different to Compass assessment notifications but it may be an easier tool to navigate the assessment timelines.
Further support for our students is provided for our students from James Green, the College Dux of 2023. James has created links to videos that will help each student organise their emails, documents and planning throughout the year. I encourage each student and parent to look at these great resources as we know that if our young men’s minds are organised then greater learning can occur.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF WELLBEING

Year 7 Camp
It was a hive of activity at The Great Aussie Bush Camp during Week 2. The 139 strong group left for an adventure, including mud courses, the giant swing, canoeing and high ropes courses. All the boys were well behaved and exhibited the true Patrician spirit. A massive thank you to the Year 7 team, led by Mr Hammond, Mr Tanceski, Ms Hine, Mr Jeffries, Mr Islam, Ms Balezza and Ms Haley-Herbert were impressed with the ‘have a go’ nature of the youngest men of Holy Cross. There were some sting bonds formed that will last a lifetime.
Diaries
The College Diary for 2025 is a pillar of information for both students and parents. These are regularly checked in HCT and need to be signed by parents regularly. The diary also contains all the information required for your son to set his academic targets and SMART goals.
Uniform and Grooming
The College has high standards with regards to Grooming and Uniform. These are outlined in the College Diary. If your son infringes this policy, then you may be contacted to collect him from the College.
As a reminder the following are prohibited:
- Fades (any type)
- Earrings (including clear earrings)
- Mullets
- Long Fringes
- Bracelets or anklets
- Necklaces that are visible.
Wellbeing Space
The College now has a dedicated Wellbeing Space. This area can be utilised by students on Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes. There are games and activities to enjoy and potentially regular visits by Gus.

Class of 2024 High Achievers Assembly
On Friday 14th February, the College celebrated a remarkable group of young men; our 2024 HSC High Achievers. Congratulations to the 32 students (39% of the HSC cohort) who were placed on the HSC Distinguished Achievers list for those who achieved a result in the highest possible Band (+90%) for one or more courses.
Two students were named all rounders Alex Mutimer and Alex Van Es who achieved a Band 6 in every course they sat. Angus Frawley received 1st place in the state for Electrotechnology.
It was a wonderful celebration of all that they had achieved and showed the younger men of Holy Cross College what they can achieve when you do the little things right. Alex Mutimer was asked to address the assembly to talk about his HSC journey that resulted in him achieving the highest ATAR of the cohort. Below is an excerpt from his speech:
Remember, you are not facing this challenge alone, generations of Holy Cross Men have experienced what you are going through and are always ready to offer support. Collaboration plays a crucial role in success. It’s not just about individual accomplishments but about how you lift each other up, work together and contribute to a shared goal.
Throughout Year 12, Mr Raymond often compared the HSC to a swimming team – while each person competes individually, they represent their team and true excellence is only achieved collectively. The friendships and connections you build here will leave a lasting impact, shaping both your school experience and your future. Without a doubt, our year group's remarkable achievements across various fields stem from our commitment to supporting one another – whether it was the countless hours spent studying together after school and at Top Ryde Library or the willingness to celebrate successes and navigate challenges as a team.
The truth is that your time spent in high school can be the best six years of your life - but only if you buy in and make it so. The excellence that is ever so present at Holy Cross is a combination of the dedication and persistence of students and staff in academic, religious and co-curricular endeavours. Excellence doesn’t just happen; it’s something you must actively pursue - you have to buy in to get something out. Whether it’s academics, sports, public speaking, music, leadership, or any other activity, your commitment determines your outcome. The more you invest in your goals, the greater your rewards will be. Don’t waste this valuable six years just going through the motions – embrace every opportunity and make this time unforgettable.
These young men have raised the bar for future generations and we thank them for all they have done for the College.
Mr Raymond
2024 Year 12 Coordinator

Assembly Performance Year 10 Music Class
The Year 10 Music Class is a small but talented group of musicians who have made a big impact on the College since they were in Year 7. They have performed in various ensemble and solo roles in the Choir, the Stage Band, the College Rock and Amadeus extension ensembles. They have truly been a great asset to the College by using their skills to make masses and assemblies more enjoyable. They have also put themselves out there in situations like Eisteddfods, Open Day, and other public performances, taking every opportunity to extend themselves in situations that many would be intimidated by. Under the direction of Mr Sonnak they have explored many styles of music through listening analysis, composition and of course performance. At the assembly they performed "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson to great reception.

RYDE DISTRICT MUMS - Article on Facebook
Nice little article by Ryde District Mums. Yes we are very proud of all our school successes in recent years.

On Monday 17th February, the Year 10 Elective History class attended Event Cinemas at Macquarie Centre. They viewed the film September 5, which explored the events of the 1972 Munich Olympics where a broadcasting crew finds itself covering the hostage crisis involving athletes. The movie also integrated real footage of the events.
Students will be studying History in the Media with a focus on terrorism during Term 2 and September 5 showcased how historical events are broadcasted all over the world through media. The aim of this excursion was to foster curiosity and discussion amongst the class as an introduction to our next topic.

Recently our past 4 highest HSC achievers who produced ATARS as high as 99.75 came back to guide and mentor our current HSC students for a whole day of work shops. They all spoke about how Holy Cross is a special school, however, you only get out what you put in. Holy Cross produces all round men who make a difference in the world and our entire Year 12 group left the day feeling motivated but most importantly reassured they can succeed. The motto from old boy James Green was “ if it’s going to be, it’s up to me”
2025 is up and running for our Holy Cross Cadets with preparations underway for the annual AFX camp #HCCcadets

Thursday Sport @HCCRYDE 13 February 2025
Sports back @hccryde - tremendous day of SCS sport on courts, fields and pools all around Sydney. The College Touch teams had a clean sweep with solid results in Basketball and Water Polo to start the year. Round 2 next week #maroonandgold #hccsport #successbreedssuccess
