Dear Holy Cross Community
Last Tuesday, Fr Greg, Mrs Christina Breda and myself attended St Mary's Cathedral Hall for the Sydney Archbishops Awards for Student Excellence. These awards recognise young men and women from across all Catholic schools for their commitment to Catholic values and for actively contributing to the faith life of the school, parish and wider community. I congratulate Finton Cottrell on being awarded this very prestigious award.
The citation is below:
Citation:
Finton Cottrell models the living out of his Baptismal calling through servant leadership and discipleship. As a recent participant in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Youth (RCIY) program, he actively expresses his faith within both his parish of St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Ryde and his school community, Holy Cross College, Ryde. Finton serves as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and lector at weekly Mass. He is also actively engaged in the parish youth group. This year, Finton performed in the live Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. He attends Adoration, assists with parish retreats, and contributes to various prayer services.
At school, Finton is part of the Army Cadet Unit, serves at morning and whole-school Masses and co-founded the youth group Brothers in Christ, while leading initiatives like the lunchtime Rosary in May. As a mentor in the RCIY program and a Student Councillor, he supports younger students in their faith and promotes social justice initiatives in collaboration with other leaders and Year Coordinators. His dedication to faith, leadership, and service makes him an inspiring role model who lives out our Catholic values.
He is a wonderful example to his fellow Holy Cross students.

Next Monday, we are inducting our 2026 College Leaders. It seems that this ceremony is coming around faster each year. I would like to thank the current College Student Leadership Team for the wonderful work that they have done over the past year and in particular signal out Mrs Jenna Belcastro for her efforts in supporting the leaders in their work. I look forward to working with the 2026 team to continue to build on their good work.
Father’s Day is fast approaching and once again we are hosting a Fathers day Mass and Breakfast BBQ on Thursday, 4 September at 7:30am. Hopefully we will get a chance to celebrate together and we are looking forward to hosting as many dads as we can.
In Cruce Salus
Dear Parents, Carers, Students, Staff and Friends of the College,
Every Day Counts………..
We all know how important regular attendance is. Every day your son is absent, he is missing opportunities for academic, social, emotional, spiritual and physical growth and development. Regular attendance is vital if your son is to realise his potential! There is a direct correlation between attendance and academic achievement and students who have excellent attendance are more likely to perform to the best of their ability in all aspects of College life. Excellent attendance also engenders feelings of belonging and connectedness and contributes to our young men feeling part of the Holy Cross community.
At times we may allow our child to miss the ‘odd’ day of school or make excuses for their lack of punctuality thinking that the occasional absence or lateness won’t really matter. The table below (courtesy of NSW Department of Education) demonstrates clearly how quickly lost time accumulates and the incredible difference it can make to overall time at school and ultimately time on task.
Too many boys arrive late to the College each morning with no credible reason. We all know and appreciate that this would not be accommodated for or allowed in the workforce and similarly it is not acceptable at school. We thank you for your cooperation in assisting your son to establish good routines in the morning to ensure that they are on time each day for school.
The next table demonstrates what constitutes excellent attendance. It also gives a clear indication of when we should be concerned about a student's attendance. I often remark to the students that whilst 90% is a mark that we would all be happy with in an exam, when speaking in terms of attendance this equals 1 day off each fortnight and represents a significant amount of lost learning.
Our goal here at Holy Cross is to assist every student to become the very best version of themselves. This is only possible if they have excellent attendance and adhere to one of our very simple catch-phrases; Right Place, Right Time, Right Equipment, Right Attitude.
Of course there are times students need to stay home when they are ill and we understand that there are some students who face significant challenges coming to school. What we are asking is for families and students to be cognisant of the above and work with the College in ensuring that all students attend school every day that we are open for instruction.
Please reach out to your son’s HCT teacher or Year Coordinator if you would like some support in improving your son’s regular attendance at school.
Looking ahead
The end of Term 3 is always one of the busiest times of the school year with the main focus on our Year 12 cohort as they complete 13 years of formal education. Our senior class have returned well from their Trial exams and I look forward to watching them finish well over the coming weeks. FROM THE DIRECTOR OF LEARNING & CURRICULUM
New Directions in Our Academic Culture

At Holy Cross College we continue to strengthen our academic culture providing opportunities for students to embrace challenges, pursue excellence and prepare themselves for the future with confidence and purpose.
Earlier this term, our College community came together at the Academic Assembly to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our Year 7–10 students. It was a wonderful occasion to recognise the effort, determination, and excellence that so many of our students bring to their learning each day. For the first time, we used each student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) to determine award recipients. This provided a fair and consistent way to acknowledge achievement across all subjects and ensured that students who applied themselves broadly and steadily were celebrated.
A student’s GPA is calculated by including every grade a student earns. Each grade is given a numerical value. These values are then added together and divided by the number of subjects studied, producing a single score, the GPA. This means that every subject counts equally, and the result reflects a student’s overall academic performance rather than strength in just one or two areas. It provides a fair and balanced measure of learning, while also encouraging steady effort and improvement across the board.
Alongside this initiative, we are delighted to announce an expanded suite of elective courses for Year 9 in 2026. In addition to our current offerings, students will now have the opportunity to select from exciting new subjects such as Philosophy, Psychology, Marine and Aquaculture, Korean, Film Studies, Critical Thinking, International Studies, Drama, Peak Performance, and The Athlete’s Edge. These additions reflect our commitment to nurturing diverse interests and equipping students with the skills to thrive in a changing world. We are especially grateful to our dedicated staff who have generously offered their expertise to deliver these courses, and we look forward with anticipation to seeing the choices our Year 8 students make as they prepare for the next stage of their learning journey.
Finally, as we look across the school, our thoughts turn to Year 12, who now find themselves in the final weeks of their secondary education. With the HSC examinations less than two months away, this is a pivotal moment to remain focused, disciplined, and resilient. We encourage all students in Year 12 to use the support of their teachers, peers, and families as they work towards preparing for their final examinations in October.Cecilia Batista

Mission and Identity

Pray for Peace in the World
Lord, in this Jubilee Year of Hope,
we turn to you with hearts full of longing.
Lord of peace, bringer of hope,
Pour out your grace upon all people of the world—no matter
their creed or nationality.
Those burdened by conflict,

those yearning for justice,
those clinging to hope in the face of despair.
May your peace take root in every heart,
and your hope rises like dawn over every land.
Amen

Blessed Carlo Acutis, a young Italian teenager who died at the age of fifteen in 2006, is set to be canonised on 7 September, 2025. Known as "God's Influencer," Carlo lived a life centered on the Eucharist, which he called his "highway to heaven". He attended Mass daily and spent time in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.
Carlo was a normal, simple, and spontaneous teenager who loved nature, played soccer, and had many friends. He possessed a remarkable gift for attracting others and was seen as an example, particularly for his use of modern communication tools. A self-taught computer programmer, he used his skills to spread the Gospel, communicate values, and share beauty online. He organised an international exhibition on Eucharistic miracles, utilising it for catechesis and evangelisation.
His life serves as a model for young people, encouraging them to prioritise God and serve others, especially the marginalised. Carlo's heroic virtues included profound charity towards the poor, homeless, and outcasts, and a strong desire to bring people back to God. He faced his final illness with serenity, offering his sufferings for the Pope and the Church, and expressing a desire to go straight to Heaven. His upcoming canonisation in early September, celebrates a young man of our time who was captivated by Christ and became a beacon of light, demonstrating that faith does not distance us from life but immerses us more deeply in it.
Here is a short article on his relics titled “Young teen’s relics a reminder for pilgrims that holiness “is not impossible.”

Delany Fundraising Launch
Holy Cross College this term will be supporting the Delany Foundation as part of our Social Justice plan. The Delany Foundation is an organisation that was established by the Patrician Brothers in order to improve the human and spiritual condition of young people in need, especially in places of Patrician mission in developing countries.
Today the works of the Patrician Brothers can be seen in countries such as Kenya, Ghana and Papua New Guinea. Every year Holy Cross partakes in fundraising for the Delany Foundation and it’s an initiative deeply rooted in our spiritual charism of giving to the poor.

This is an exciting time for all to get involved and give back to a cause so close to our hearts. Please keep an eye out for these initiatives in the coming weeks.
Thank you again for your ongoing support.
Year 7/8/9 Evangelisation Day
On Wednesday, 13 August students in years 7,8 and 9 accompanied by Miss Ashley Galea travelled to Mount Saint Joseph Milperra to take part in the Sydney Catholic Schools Evangelisation Day. Students participated in music ministry, explored the system theme of Hope and joined together as a faith based community in adoration and prayer. The day was enjoyed by all students who attended who particularly enjoyed the opportunity for fellowship.

Year 7 & 8 Deanery Youth Afternoon Term 3
On Friday, 15 August students in Years 7 and 8 were presented with another opportunity to engage in their faith and attend the 7 & 8 Deanery Youth Afternoon for Term 3. This event was hosted by Marist College Eastwood where the students enjoyed a sausage sizzle bbq before delving into the topic of being created in the image and likeness of God under the theme of ‘Masterpiece in Motion’. Students had the opportunity to hear a talk from Father Daniel Drum and again engage in meaningful fellowship. The Deanery event for Term 4 will be aimed at students in year 9 & 10. Please keep your eyes peeled for more information.

Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On Friday, 15 August we celebrated the feast of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Year 8 attended Mass and we had a number of local parishioners and families attend. This is one of the highest feasts of the Church year. A solemnity is a celebration of the greatest importance and we recall that Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was taken body and soul into heaven. This truth is not only about Mary’s glory but also our hope: what God did for Mary, He desires for each of us. May her faith, obedience and love inspire us to walk with Christ more closely in our mission every day.
Father’s Day Mass
We invite all fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, and spiritual fathers to join us for Mass as we give thanks to God for the gift of fatherhood. Mass will be held on Thursday, 4 September at 7:30am. Fathers play a unique and irreplaceable role in our lives and in the Church. They are called to be images of God the Father's love, strength, and guidance, nurturing faith and virtue in their families. During Mass, we will offer a special blessing for all fathers, asking for God's continued grace and wisdom upon them. Let us come together as a community to honor and pray for these men who reflect God's provident care in our world.
A barbeque breakfast will be hosted after the Mass. Please RSVP via the following link: https://compasstix.com/e/dwxqgyr0tx

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF WELLBEING
What an exciting few weeks it has been at the College. The Wellbeing team has been busy acknowledging the positive contributions and choices that the students are making each day.
The College has also hosted Nick Kenny, formerly of KYDS to speak with our wider school community and provided strategies to assist with the development of positive mental wealth.
Parents in Touch
On Wednesday, 29 August, Nick Kenny presented a session called ‘Mental Wealth’ which highlighted the LOVES strategy to assist parents when their children may need some additional support during a mental-ill health episode. Please see below for some actionable tips.
|
L |
Listen – really listen, try using supportive conversations, such as “Thank you for sharing that” and "That sounds rough” |
|
O |
Observe - Take stock of what your child is saying and how they are acting - have things changed? |
|
V |
Value - Really engage with what they are saying and doing - this will let them know that you are there to support them through this difficult time. |
|
E |
Empathise - Don’t try to ‘fix’ the problem, work with your child so that they can see a way out. |
|
S |
Support - Be a pillar for them, which can be often hard. Show them that you are committed to assisting them and working with them to find external services to work with them |
Many parents provided feedback, which indicated that they gained some new and relevant information from this presentation - it was interactive and allowed us to pause and reflect on how we can best support the young people in our lives.
Attendance Awards
As a College community, we have been working towards improving the College attendance. We have managed to continue our improvement, with an average College attendance of over 90% for close to 4 terms now.
As a result of this, it is imperative that we reward the students who have recorded 100% attendance in this first semester. It is such a privilege to recognise these students for their positive contribution to their education.

Dear Parents and Carers,
School Fees:
This is a reminder regarding school fee payments. We are now in the final three months of the payment period, and all fees are due by 15 November 2025. Please refer to your statement for your payment details and due date.
For those who pay by term, the August payment was due recently. Sydney Catholic Schools will be sending an updated statement in the first week of September.
You can make payments using the Bpay details found in the top right corner of your statement, or conveniently through the Compass Portal.
If you wish to change your payment frequency (weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly), please email the accounts department at accounts@hccryde.syd.edu.au with your name, your son's name, and your preferred frequency. Please note that choosing the quarterly option means three payments will be due: the first in Term 1, the second in Term 2, and the final payment in Term 3.
For any enquiries, please contact Ms Anne Hemmings, the College Bursar, at
accounts@hccryde.syd.edu.au.
If you are facing financial difficulties, I encourage you to contact me directly for a confidential discussion about potential fee support from Sydney Catholic Schools. My email is renita.gibson@syd.catholic.edu.au.
Building News:
We are aiming for the new Canteen space to be opened and ready for business on day one of Term 3. The new space is located behind the FLP on the Top Oval.
Parking, drop off and pick up:
We ask that when you are on site that you adhere to the no parking, no stopping and disabled only signs. These are in place to ensure the students safety when being dropped off or picked up. Please do not park or sit idle in front of any of the College gates or the dumpster as these are in frequent use by the College. The disabled only parking is for vehicles with a disabled sticker only.
Renita Gibson
BUSINESS MANAGER

A busy Term 3 is underway and Year 7 has involved a lot of extra curricular activities. The end of the winter sports season saw a number of boys involved in the Rugby League and Football (soccer) finals. There have also been a number of our boys performing at both the SCS Estiedford and the Ryde Estiedford. It isimpressive to see so many of our youngest students of the College getting involved in the cultural life of the school. Additionally, 13 of our young men received 100% Attendance Awards at a recent Year Assembly. This is an impressive number and shows the dedication and commitment that these boys have.
Last Friday, Year 7 engaged in a Pastoral Lesson that was focused on building strategies to deal with negative interactions that can escalate to bullying. The lesson was built from the Bullying is Never Ok! resources and aims to help students identify situations that they can deal with themselves and know when they need to seek help from a trusted adult. Some homerooms were acting out situations with role plays, while others engaged in some story telling or just had a good chat about the issues. The goal of the lesson was to provide the students with actionable real world strategies that can help them deescalate a situation. There are a range of phrases and actions that minimise the impact that the bully feels they have. This can be as simple as ignoring them or telling them to stop and then removing yourself from the situation. However, often the hardest part is keeping your cool and not using language that bites back and escalates the problem. We will follow this up in Week 6, when Year 7 and 8 are visited by Backlip Against Bullying during our Pastoral Lesson.
The College will be sharpening our focus on grooming and uniform over the second half of this term. A reminder that if your son is missing a piece of uniform, they need to see me before school to get a uniform pass. If they have a note from home explaining the reason why, they will face no further consequences. What we want to avoid is students making the conscious decision to not conform with uniform and grooming standards.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

- Equal First in Year with a GPA of 3.88 - Preston Tam, Finn Roumanos, Bartholemew Barca and Joshua Andoniou
On Friday, 15 August the HCT team took Year 9 through a study skills session looking at the misconceptions of study, the most effective ways to study and the science behind turning information into long term memory. Students were given copies of study planners and took time to map out their remaining assessments for the term. These are invaluable skills that will set them up for success not just this term, but throughout their remaining school years and beyond.
Congratulations to the following students who represented the College at recent Eisteddfods.

YEAR 9 COORDINATOR

This has been an extremely busy term for Year 12 as they take every opportunity to learn from their teachers and embrace the opportunities intheir final term of secondary education.
The College Athletics Carnival was such a successful day because of this group’s have a go attitude. Students in Year 12, turned up in great numbers to participate and lead the school in their final College Carnival. A great day was had by all.
Earlier this term, we gathered of Stage 6 students to give them an opportunity to learn about the importance of sleep and educated them on ways sleep can impact our lives. Lisa Maltman, from the Sleep Connection had students complete a sleep diary to observe their patterns of sleep and provided them with ways to create healthy sleep habits. It was so pleasing to see that so many students stayed back afterwards to ask questions and then over the past few weeks here how they have applied what they learnt and have seen improvement to how they feel and their ability to concentrate.
I am extremely proud of this cohort and the way that they approached their final assessment tasks being the HSC Trial Examinations. Students worked collaboratively every day, sharing their understanding of content and helping develop the understanding of others. They showed great dedication, organisation and drive to succeed.
As they complete their last few weeks, I encourage them to work hard and enjoy the celebrations and milestones along the way.

On Friday, 1 August the College held an Academic Assembly to celebrate the academic achievements of our young men.
The College was privileged to have special guest Br Jerome who spoke and presented awards to our high performance students, while our RCIA students were also achnowledged. The assembly concluded with a whole school blessing to the Year 12 students before they begin their trial HSC Exams.
Congratulations to all of our Award recipients for your hard work and dedication.

LEARNING @ HCC - Year 8 Korean
Our Year 8 Korean students had an exciting week diving into Korean culture! They explored traditional (tal) mask painting, creating completely original designs using brushes, paint and their creativity. Many incorporated vibrant Korean colours (Sam Tae Guk) - red, blue and yellow - expressing both cultural impressions and personal backgrounds.
To top it off, students made their own (Ddakji) - a popular traditional Korean paper tile game - and finished the lesson with a fun, competitive round!

LEARNING @HCC - Year 9 Geography
Our Year 9 Geography students recently stepped out of the classroom and into the heart of Sydney for hands-on fieldwork exploring the "Changing Places" unit. Investigating urban renewal and transformation in Pyrmont and Bangaroo, students observed first-hand how these dynamic precincts have evolved over time. From former industrial hubs to thriving residential and commercial centres, the sites provided rich insights into planning sustainability, and the social and environmental impacts of change. It was a valuable opportunity for students to connect theory with real-world application and deepen their understanding of urban geography.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT SUCCESS STORIES
Outstanding Student Success Story #1
Congratulation to Year 12 student William Morgan on the outstanding performance at the 2025 School Sport National Championships in July. William showcased his exceptional talent and determination, finishing 3rd in the 200m Individual Medley, 5th in the 400 Individual Medley, and contributing to a strong 4th place finish in the 4x50m freestyle relay.
A fantastic achievement and proud moment for William and the school community!
Outstanding Student Success Story #2
From the track to the podium - congratulation to Valentino Knezovic in Year 10, who was crowned Ryde Sportsperson of the year.
A well-deserved honour recognising his dedication, talent and incredible achievements on and off the track.
LEARNING @ HCC - Year 11 VET Sport Coaching and Sport, Lifestyle & Recreation
Year 11 VET Sport Coaching and Sport, Lifestyle & Recreation students successfully completed their First Aid Qualifications recently. Thanks to JT first Aid, students were able to complete both online modules and practical emergency care strategies in order to develop their understanding and proficiency in first aid. Students should be proud of themselves for engaging in a course that will enhance their professional skills in any workplace environment.

LEARNING @ HCC - Year 12 Biology
Year 12 Biology students recently conducted a first-hand investigation into the structure and functions of the mammalian kidney.
Through detailed dissection and examination, students explored the kidney's internal features, including the cortex, medulla, and renal pelvis, and related these structures of their roles in filtering blood and production of urine. This practical activity provided valuable insights into the kidney's function in maintaining the body's internal balance and reinforced key concepts from their studies.

On Thursday, 31 July students from Holy Cross had the opportunity to take part in a very special outreach program through the Vinnnies Van. The Vinnies Van provides meals, drinks and friendly conversions to people experiencing homelessness and hardship in our community.
Our students worked alongside dedicated Vinnies volunteers to prepare and serve food, and most importantly, to share kindness and respect with those who came to the van. This experience was not only about giving but also about learning. Students reflected on the importance of compassion, human dignity and the call to serve others, following the example of Jesus.
We are very proud of our students embracing this opportunity with open hearts and generous spirits.
